Citizen science: challenges and opportunities

The panel will present an overview of topics under debate and ongoing experiences on citizen science, from an extended perspective of the co-production of knowledge and the openness of science, especially its role in agendas and controversies on issues and challenges in facing current socio-environmental emergencies.

About

Today’s understanding of open science has been expanding: from open access to scientific literature (its initial motto) to open research data, open infrastructure and hardware, open laboratory notebooks, open education and science citizen. It ranges from increasing the volume and speed of scientific production to greater porosity and interlocution of science with other types of knowledge, presenting new challenges to the traditional scope of scientific communication.

Citizen science also broadens its agenda. It constitutes one of the bets to mobilize and give visibility to the contribution of a greater diversity of actors and spaces in the production of knowledge, data and information relevant not only to the advancement of science, but also to the protagonism of other perspectives in the face of social issues and conflicts, territorial and environmental. Hence the articulations between the themes of open and citizen science, the decoloniality of knowledge, cognitive and data justice, and socio-environmental and climate justice.

The panel will present an overview of topics under debate and ongoing experiences on citizen science, from an extended perspective of the co-production of knowledge and the openness of science, especially its role in agendas and controversies on issues and challenges in facing current socio-environmental emergencies.
