Open Science Modus Operandi of Research Communication
July 24, 2023, 14:00 – 15:30 (BRT/UTC-3)
Language: English
This webinar will present and describe PKP’s Journal Integrity Initiative, which borrows the commonly used Nutrition Facts Label on food products to develop a similarly designed Publication Facts Label as a guide for readers to a journal’s adherence to scholarly standards for journal publication.
About
In an Age of Misinformation and at a time of increased open access to research, the importance of the public both learning about and becoming able to assess research sources is particularly timely. The public needs to see what research has to offer in terms of reliability and validity and to be able to judge whether any given research publication has adhered to scholarly standards. To address this need, the Public Knowledge Project is currently testing a Publication Facts Label (PFL) which is modeled on the Nutrition Facts Label commonly found on food products in many parts of the world. This webinar will present the concept, elements, and design of the PFL, as well as the results of the initial testing of the PFL with high school students. It will describe the verification systems employed by the PKP publishing platform OJS that provide the data to the PFL, as well as the plans for proposing the concept as an industry standard for other publishers to adopt.
