João Paulo Souza, MD, Ph.D., is the Center Director of the WHO/PAHO Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (BIREME). BIREME is a WHO/PAHO entity that focuses on enabling access to and use of scientific and technical information for action in health. With a clinical background in maternal health and critical care medicine, Dr. Souza developed graduate studies on the intersection of epidemiology and maternal health, working mainly on Global Health issues with a keen interest in maternal mortality, social determinants of health, the evidence pipeline, and knowledge translation. Dr. Souza holds a full professorship in Social Medicine from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and has published over 250 scientific papers. He has worked in various capacities and positions with WHO since 2008, moving to PAHO in 2022.
