The role of books in open science

Open science implies new challenges for publishers of academic books, here we will discuss these challenges, how the SciELO Books platform has served as a tool for the visibility of publications; and how to generate good practices among publishers who have the book as their main medium for distributing content.

About

The discussion on scientific publishing is often focused on the timeliness and impact of journals: the agility of reviews and publishing of texts in a few weeks, and even their version as preprint, proved to be crucial activities for some disciplines during the pandemic; in addition to having a solid metrics, which have been consolidated over the years. Is it possible to consider the same terms when we talk about academic books? The work developed in the publishing areas dedicated to books has shown its opportunities as well as worked with its own challenges, where the role of the single author, the collections, the limitations and opportunities of collective books, the transformation of workflows, digital and on-demand distribution, and now, the challenges of open science demand reviewing books in their own parameters and highlighting their possibilities. In this scenario the importance of SciELO Books is a unique experience in our continent, but a resource less used by university publishers, unlike journals.

The panel will discuss the following topics:

What opportunities do we have? What are the scenarios for books? What are the opportunities for books in the face of open science? What opportunities and proposals can we collectively promote in Latin America so that academic book publishers can take advantage of and disseminate the benefits of open science?
