Relevance of Nationally Published Quality Journals
18 May 2023, 10:00 – 12:00 (BRT/UTC-3)
Language: English/Portuguese with simultaneous translation
How should the succession of editor of a journal be? This is a recurring question in several journals and/or sponsors, which often do not have a clear and explicit procedure in their charter. That there is a need to think about the succession is a reality, the editor should not remain in charge forever. There are many ways to make this substitution without the journal suffering a deviation from its mission or an interruption in its editorial process. In this first part of the discussion, the intention is to show the experience of editors of journals maintained by publishers and how they guide and/or conduct the process. 3 experienced editors representing Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley will participate in this discussion and will share their experiences with this theme.
About
This SciELO 25 Years Seminar, which is part of the activities celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the SciELO Program, will be held in collaboration with ABEC Brazil. The seminar “Editor Succession Models” is divided into two parts, which will address the important topic of editor succession, which, although it should be a well-defined process, can often be a serious problem in the continuity of editorial policy and even the journal survival. Within the main theme, different approaches will be addressed. In the first webinar, speakers will share their personal experience and that of their journals, as well as how publishers guide the process. In the second webinar, different experiences of journals participating in the SciELO Network will be shared.
In the seminar, “Editor Succession Models. Part 1 – Experience of journals from commercial publishers”, will present and discuss the experiences of editors of journals maintained by publishers and how they guide or conduct the process. We will have Sigmar de Mello Rode, president of ABEC Brazil and member of the SciELO Brasil Advisory Committee, coordinating the presentations and the debate between Karunika Kardak, Publisher, Medicine and Life Sciences (Springer Nature); Taíssa Vila, editor-in-chief of The Lancet Regional Health – Americas (Elsevier/Lancet); Ricardo Antunes Azevedo, editor-in-chief of Annals of Applied Biology (Wiley) and Silvia Galleti, editor-in-chief of Arquivos do Instituto Biológico.
In the second part of the seminar, “Editor Succession Models. Part 2 – Experience of SciELO Network journals”, presentations and discussions will be coordinated by Silvia Galleti, who will have Sigmar de Mello Rode to provoke debate among guests, guest editors of SciELO Network journals. This discussion intends to share the experiences of these journal editors from teaching and research institutions and professional associations who will present their models for conducting the succession process.
